The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) suffered a brutal session on Tuesday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index plummeting 3,078.56 points. The index closed at 92,673.81, marking a sharp reversal as selling pressure gripped the trading floor throughout the day.

Investors scrambled to offload positions across the board. The heavy losses wiped out significant market capitalization in a matter of hours, fueled by a mix of political uncertainty and shifting expectations regarding the central bank’s upcoming monetary policy.

Market participants pointed to the lack of clarity on the fiscal front as a primary trigger. Institutional investors, typically the bedrock of stability, were among the most active sellers. Their retreat left retail investors with little room to maneuver, accelerating the downward momentum as technical support levels failed to hold.

“The market was overheated,” said a Karachi-based brokerage analyst. “We saw a correction coming, but the velocity of today’s slide caught most desks off guard.”

Energy and banking stocks took the brunt of the hit. Investors moved to lock in profits after a recent rally, but the volume of selling suggested a deeper shift in sentiment rather than simple profit-taking. High-interest rates continue to weigh on corporate earnings, and with the State Bank of Pakistan’s next policy decision looming, the appetite for risk has evaporated.

Foreign investors, who had shown a lukewarm interest in Pakistani equities over the last quarter, remained largely on the sidelines today. Their absence left the local market vulnerable to domestic volatility, where every headline regarding tax targets and IMF compliance now dictates the day’s trend.

The KSE-100 is now testing key psychological levels that haven’t been challenged in weeks. Whether the market can find a floor Wednesday morning depends entirely on whether institutional buyers decide the current valuations are attractive enough to jump back in — or if the panic of the last few hours is just the beginning of a longer slide.
