ISLAMABAD — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif officially launched “Sky47” on Tuesday, a high-capacity data center and artificial intelligence cloud platform based in the capital. The facility is being billed by the government as the country’s largest digital infrastructure project to date.

The move aims to localize data hosting for both public and private sectors. For years, Pakistani firms have relied on international cloud service providers, incurring heavy foreign exchange costs and facing latency issues. Sky47 is designed to capture that traffic, offering a domestic alternative for sensitive data storage and computational needs.

“This infrastructure is the backbone of our digital transformation,” the Prime Minister told officials at the launch ceremony. He emphasized that the facility would provide a secure environment for government data, which has long been a point of vulnerability for state departments.

The facility operates on a Tier-III standard, featuring advanced cooling systems and redundant power supplies. Industry analysts note that while the hardware is a necessary step, the real challenge lies in the software ecosystem. Without a robust suite of local AI applications, the platform risks becoming a high-end storage locker rather than a hub for innovation.

The project is a collaboration between the government and private sector tech partners. It promises to slash operational costs for local startups and financial institutions by removing the need for offshore data transit.

Cybersecurity remains a central talking point. With the rise of state-sponsored digital threats, moving government data onto a local, managed cloud is a strategic priority for the federal cabinet. Officials confirm that the facility will be subject to strict oversight by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication.

The government has yet to release a full pricing structure for commercial users, but developers expect the rates to be competitive against regional cloud hubs in the Middle East. Whether local businesses migrate their operations to Sky47 will depend on the platform’s uptime reliability and the speed of its network integration.

For now, the facility stands as a test of Pakistan’s ability to manage its own digital sovereignty in an increasingly data-dependent global economy.
