Punjab Schools Could Shift Academic Calendar to Beat Summer Heat Punjab’s education authorities are weighing a fundamental shift in the province’s academic calendar, aiming to align school schedules with the region’s increasingly brutal summer heatwaves. The proposal, currently under review by the School Education Department, suggests moving the start of the academic year or restructuring long summer breaks to ensure students aren’t forced into classrooms during the peak of the June and July heat. Officials are grappling with a recurring problem: rising temperatures are making it difficult for students to commute and study safely.

Last year, several districts were forced to issue emergency closures as temperatures soared past 45 degrees Celsius, disrupting the syllabus and causing administrative chaos. “We are looking at a calendar that respects the weather,” a senior official in the education ministry said on condition of anonymity. “The current model was designed for a different climate. It’s no longer practical to expect children to sit in classrooms during the hottest weeks of the year.” The proposed changes aren’t just about safety they are about continuity.

When schools close abruptly due to heatwaves, the academic calendar suffers, often leading to rushed exams or shortened winter breaks. By planning for the heat in advance, the government hopes to avoid the stop-start nature of the current system. Not everyone is sold on the idea.

Teachers’ unions have raised concerns about how such a shift would impact the national examination schedule, which is tied to federal boards. If Punjab goes its own way, it risks creating a synchronization gap with the rest of the country. “It’s a logistical nightmare,” said a representative for a private schools association.

“You can’t just change the calendar without considering the board exams, the university admissions, and the teachers’ training schedules. It needs a unified approach, not a provincial experiment.

” The department is expected to present a finalized framework to the Chief Minister’s office by the end of the month. Whether this transition moves forward or stalls in red tape remains the central question. For now, students and parents are left waiting to see if their next academic year will be defined by the calendar or the thermometer.
