The National Crime Agency (NCA) has issued a blunt warning to parents: stop posting photos of your children on social media. What begins as a digital scrapbook for family and friends is increasingly becoming a goldmine for predators and identity thieves.

The agency’s latest advisory highlights a chilling reality. Once a photo hits the internet, you lose control over it. Predators are using these images to build dossiers on children, while fraudsters harvest personal details—birthdays, school uniforms, and locations—to commit identity theft that can haunt a child long into adulthood.

“Every photo shared is a permanent digital footprint,” an NCA spokesperson told reporters. “Parents think they’re sharing memories, but they’re often inadvertently providing a roadmap for criminals.”

The risks go beyond simple privacy concerns. Advanced facial recognition software, now easily accessible, means that even photos posted with the best intentions can be scraped, stored, and re-purposed by bad actors. The NCA noted that the sheer volume of “innocent” content uploaded daily makes it nearly impossible for platforms to police the misuse of these images.

Privacy advocates have long argued that “sharenting”—the practice of parents over-sharing their children’s lives—creates a permanent record that children never consented to. This latest move by the NCA shifts the conversation from a matter of digital etiquette to one of active physical and financial risk.

If you must share, the agency suggests strict measures: strip metadata from photos, ensure privacy settings are at their most restrictive, and—above all—think twice about whether the post is necessary.

The message is clear: your child’s privacy isn’t a social media currency. In an age of automated data harvesting, the safest place for your child’s photo is off the internet entirely.
