A local street vendor transformed into an emergency responder Tuesday afternoon, pulling a toddler from a water-filled construction pit in the heart of the city’s busy commercial district. The rescue, captured on a nearby storefront’s security camera, shows the split-second decision that likely saved the child’s life.

The footage begins with the two-year-old wandering away from a group of shoppers, stepping onto a loose plywood sheet covering the excavation site. The board shifted instantly. The child slipped into the murky, waist-deep water below.

Within seconds, the vendor — identified as 34-year-old Muhammad Aslam — dropped his cart and lunged toward the pit. He didn’t hesitate to jump into the debris-filled water, locating the child beneath the surface and hoisting them back to the street level as onlookers rushed to help.

“I didn’t think about the depth or the water,” Aslam said shortly after the incident. “I just saw the child disappear and knew I had to reach them before the current or the mud took hold.”

Emergency services arrived within ten minutes. Paramedics confirmed the child was shaken but unharmed, suffering only minor scrapes. The toddler was reunited with their family at the scene.

Local authorities have since cordoned off the area. The site, part of an ongoing utility project, has faced criticism from neighborhood residents for months regarding inadequate safety barriers. City officials confirmed they are now investigating the contractor responsible for the site’s maintenance.

For now, the construction pit remains blocked by metal barricades. Aslam, meanwhile, returned to his stall just hours later, downplaying his role in the afternoon’s events. He isn’t looking for a reward; he’s just glad the child is home.
