Tense Start: India, Pakistan Captains Avoid Handshake at Asia Cup Presser

In what’s already becoming one of the most talked-about moments ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, the captains of India and Pakistan skipped a handshake during the official pre-tournament press conference in Dubai.

While skippers from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and other teams were seen exchanging smiles and greetings, cameras caught a striking scene: Pakistan captain Agha Salman walked past without shaking hands with India’s Suryakumar Yadav. The moment, quickly shared on social media, added fuel to the ever-present buzz surrounding the fiercest rivalry in world cricket.

The incident wasn’t accompanied by any verbal exchange or visible tension on stage, but it didn’t go unnoticed. Fans from both sides instantly flooded Twitter, Instagram, and sports forums with reactions—some interpreting it as a deliberate snub, others brushing it off as “over-analysis.”

Interestingly, just a day earlier, PCB Chairman and ACC President Mohsin Naqvi was photographed shaking hands with Suryakumar Yadav during the trophy unveiling ceremony, a gesture that had gone viral for its message of sportsmanship. The absence of a handshake between the two captains, therefore, stood out even more.

Context of Rivalry

India and Pakistan are set to face each other later this week in what many call the “mother of all matches.” Every small gesture in the lead-up tends to carry amplified meaning, and this brief non-encounter has already become a talking point ahead of their high-voltage clash.

Whether it was a matter of timing, oversight, or quiet intent, the no-handshake episode has already ensured one thing: when India and Pakistan finally take the field, emotions will be running higher than ever.
