Karachi- The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a high alert for Karachi, warning of heavy downpours and the risk of urban flooding as a powerful monsoon system sweeps into Sindh. Light to moderate showers have already been reported in several parts of the city, with authorities bracing for multiple intense rain spells throughout the day.

According to PMD officials, Karachi may receive four to six spells of rainfall, with some areas expected to record over 100 millimeters of rain. The system, originating from India, has developed into a depression and is moving across Sindh with an unpredictable path, making rainfall intensity vary across districts.

“The pattern is unusual and complex. Some pockets may see extremely heavy rain while others get only moderate showers,” a PMD forecaster explained.

Areas Already Affected

Early morning drizzle and intermittent showers were recorded in Defence, Korangi Road, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Burns Road, M.A. Jinnah Road, Qayyumabad, Mehmoodabad, Manzoor Colony, and Baloch Colony, causing traffic disruptions in low-lying areas.

The heavy rainfall has already led to a surge of water in Malir River, which had remained dry for years but now shows signs of flash flooding after overnight showers.

City High Alert

Authorities have warned that clogged drains and poor drainage infrastructure could worsen the situation if the rain continues. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed district administrations to stay on high alert, with machinery deployed for water drainage and emergency response.

Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab said 46 major stormwater drains, including Gujjar, Orangi, and Mehmoodabad nullahs, have been cleared ahead of the monsoon season. However, he admitted that high sea levels could hinder drainage efforts.
