KARACHI: Three police personnel posted at the Gizri Police Station have been suspended following the emergence of a viral video that allegedly shows them extorting a bribe from a couple in the Clifton-Defence area, ARY News reported.
The disciplinary action was initiated after media reports highlighted the footage, which depicts officers stopping a couple travelling toward Clifton and Defence and demanding money. In the video, an officer is allegedly heard negotiating a Rs30,000 payment from the man while threatening the couple with legal action and a court appearance the next day.
Prompted by the viral clip, SSP South Mahzoor Ali ordered immediate suspensions and instituted an official departmental inquiry. The suspended personnel have been identified as Constables Raja Khalid Mehmood, Muhammad Ali, and Fayyaz Hussain, who have all been directed to report to the Garden Police Headquarters Suspension Company.
Defence SDPO Nisar Ahmed Qaimkhani has been appointed as the inquiry officer to review the digital evidence, examine the viral video, and record statements from both the accused officers and relevant witnesses. The SSP has mandated the submission of the inquiry report within seven days to guide further punitive measures.
