Rail traffic on the country’s main artery ground to a halt early this morning after a freight train derailed near the town of Matiari, leaving multiple passenger trains stranded in the summer heat.

The accident occurred when several wagons of the goods train jumped the tracks, tearing up a significant stretch of the line. Railway officials confirmed the derailment at approximately 4:00 a.m., though they have yet to offer a definitive cause.

Passengers aboard the Karachi-bound express services are currently bearing the brunt of the disruption. Many have been left waiting at smaller, ill-equipped stations for hours without clear updates on when the tracks will be cleared.

“We were told there was an issue ahead, but nobody knows how long this will take,” said a traveler waiting at a nearby stop. “The silence from the railway authorities is more frustrating than the delay itself.”

Emergency crews and heavy machinery were dispatched to the site shortly after dawn. Recovering the derailed wagons is a slow process; the heavy loads and the condition of the tracks in the area complicate the operation. A senior railway spokesperson indicated that technical teams are working to clear one track to allow for limited movement, but warned that full restoration could take well into the evening.

This incident marks yet another blow to the struggling national rail network, which has faced mounting criticism over aging infrastructure and frequent maintenance lapses. While the railway ministry has promised a formal inquiry into today’s derailment, commuters remain skeptical.

For now, the main line remains blocked. Until the wreckage is cleared, thousands of passengers are left with a simple, grim reality: they aren’t going anywhere fast.
