Karachi, August 12: The wave of street crimes in Karachi continues unabated, spreading fear and anxiety among residents. According to police, within just half an hour last night, two separate incidents in Korangi and New Karachi claimed the lives of two young men when armed assailants opened fire during resistance to robbery attempts.

Eyewitnesses said that in the Korangi incident, the suspects intercepted a motorcyclist and tried to snatch his mobile phone and cash. When he resisted, they opened fire, killing him on the spot. In the second incident, which occurred in New Karachi around the same time, robbers shot and killed another young man who resisted them, before fleeing the scene.

Police officials reported that in the first eight months of this year, the number of citizens killed during robbery resistance has reached 60, while hundreds have been injured. Statistics show that in just the current month, multiple cases of robberies and street crimes have been reported, including snatching of valuables and vehicles.

Civil society groups and concerned citizens have voiced deep concern over the growing trend, urging the government and law enforcement agencies to take strict and effective action against street crimes. Police maintain that a crackdown against criminal gangs is underway, but also advise citizens to take precautionary measures for their safety.

The escalating crime rate in Karachi once again raises the pressing question: Is the current strategy sufficient to safeguard the lives and property of citizens, or are far tougher measures now inevitable?
