The frustration over spotty 5G coverage reached a boiling point in a remote Indian village this week, where residents took a local network technician hostage, lashing him to the base of a cell tower until the service returned.

The incident occurred in a rural pocket of the country where digital connectivity has become a lifeline for local commerce and education. For days, the village had been plagued by intermittent signal drops, leaving residents unable to make calls or access mobile banking. When the technician arrived for routine maintenance, a group of villagers seized him, demanding an immediate fix to the network infrastructure.

They didn’t just hold him; they used ropes to secure him to the metal framework of the tower.

“We were tired of the empty promises,” one resident told local media. “Every time we complain, they tell us it’s a technical glitch. We wanted them to see how it feels to be stuck.”

The technician spent several hours in the heat, tethered to the structure, while local leaders gathered to negotiate a resolution. The company eventually dispatched a senior engineer to the site, promising a hardware upgrade to stabilize the connection. Only after that commitment was made did the villagers release the technician.

Local police arrived shortly after the ordeal ended. While they confirmed a complaint was filed by the service provider, officers acknowledged the deep-seated resentment fueling the act.

“People here are dependent on these towers for everything from selling their crops to school exams,” a police spokesperson said. “Patience ran out.”

The company has since issued a statement citing “unforeseen technical hurdles” for the outage, but they have yet to address the security breach at the tower site. For now, the signal is back, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the volatile gap between the promise of high-speed digital infrastructure and the reality of its maintenance in the country’s neglected corners.
