Paris/Madrid: Massive wildfires sweeping across France and Spain have forced the evacuation of more than 250,000 people, as firefighters battle fast-moving blazes fueled by extreme heat, strong winds, and prolonged drought. The crisis has claimed its first death in Spain, where an elderly man died in a wildfire near Valencia.

In southwestern France, an unprecedented wildfire has spread rapidly through the Gironde region, threatening communities on the outskirts of Bordeaux. Authorities have evacuated approximately 197,000 residents, describing it as one of the country’s largest peacetime evacuations. Thousands of people have been moved to emergency shelters, while smoke from the blaze has blanketed surrounding areas.

French authorities have deployed more than a thousand firefighters, military personnel, helicopters, and an A400M military aircraft capable of dropping fire retardants. Officials say the fire has reached an “unprecedented” scale, with changing winds making it difficult to contain. Several European countries have also sent firefighting aircraft to assist France.

In neighboring Spain, three major wildfires west of Madrid merged into a single large blaze, prompting the government to declare its first-ever national wildfire emergency. Around 70,000 to 88,000 people have either been evacuated or ordered to remain indoors because of dangerous smoke and rapidly advancing flames.

The first confirmed fatality occurred near Valencia, where an elderly man lost his life after becoming trapped by the fire. Authorities continue to warn residents to avoid affected areas and follow evacuation orders as firefighters work to prevent further casualties.

Scientists say the intensity of the fires has been worsened by repeated heatwaves, exceptionally dry conditions, and strong winds. Officials across southern Europe have warned that climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of such wildfire disasters.
