Construction crews move onto the site of a new £1.5 million nature reserve next month, marking the start of a project aimed at restoring local biodiversity. The transformation of the long-neglected land is expected to take eighteen months to complete.

The development, funded through a mix of government grants and private environmental trusts, will turn the former industrial plot into a hub for native wildlife. Planners have confirmed that contractors will begin clearing invasive plant species and installing drainage systems on the first of the month.

For the surrounding community, this is a long-awaited shift. The site had become a magnet for fly-tipping and anti-social behavior over the last decade. Local residents have spent years lobbying the council to secure the funding needed to reclaim the space, arguing that the area’s potential as a green corridor was being squandered.

The project design includes three miles of walking trails, a series of wetland ponds, and the planting of over 5,000 native trees. Environmental consultants working on the site say the wetlands are designed to act as a natural flood defense, a crucial addition given the heavy rainfall the region has seen in recent winters.

“This isn’t just about planting a few shrubs,” said the lead project manager, Sarah Jenkins. “We are creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that will eventually manage itself. We expect to see migratory birds returning within the first season of completion.”

The council has faced criticism regarding the total budget, with some local taxpayers questioning the £1.5 million price tag. Officials have defended the spending, noting that the long-term maintenance costs will be significantly lower than the current expenses incurred by cleaning up the site’s recurring waste issues.

As the bulldozers arrive in weeks, the focus shifts from planning to execution. While the site will be closed to the public during the construction phase, the council promises a grand opening that will hand the space back to the community by late next year.
