India needs just three wickets to wrap up a dominant victory on the final day of the first Test against Sri Lanka. The hosts hold a commanding lead, leaving the visitors fighting to avoid an innings defeat after a collapse in their second-innings batting order.

Jasprit Bumrah shredded the Sri Lankan top order early, claiming two crucial wickets before the lunch break. The pitch, which held up for the first two days, has begun to turn sharply, playing directly into the hands of India’s spin attack. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin have since dismantled the middle order, leaving Sri Lanka’s tail to face a relentless barrage of deliveries.

The match turned on Day 3 when India’s middle order piled on a massive total, effectively batting Sri Lanka out of the contest. Rishabh Pant’s aggressive century set the tone, forcing the Sri Lankan bowlers into defensive lines that allowed India to dictate the pace of play. By the time the declaration came, the lead had surpassed 300 runs.

Sri Lanka’s strategy to play for a draw evaporated within the first hour of play today. Their batters failed to negotiate the uneven bounce, with several players falling to questionable shot selection under mounting pressure. The visitors are currently 185 for 7, still trailing by well over a hundred runs.

The disparity in the performance of the two sides has been stark. While India’s bowling unit has maintained consistent pressure, Sri Lanka has struggled to string together partnerships. The tourists now face the reality of a lopsided start to the series, with only their lower order standing between them and a heavy defeat.

If the current momentum holds, India will secure the win before the final session. For Sri Lanka, the focus has shifted entirely to damage control and salvaging some pride before the second Test begins next week.
