Sleeping More on Weekends May Cause Fatigue the Next Day

Many people consider sleeping late on weekends after a busy week to be the best way to recover from fatigue and make up for lost sleep, but sleep experts say that this habit can actually lead to greater tiredness and sluggishness on Monday.

‎Experts say that sleeping significantly longer than usual on Saturdays and Sundays affects the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, known as the circadian rhythm. As a result, it becomes more difficult for the body to return to its normal schedule.

‎According to experts, the brain does not treat sleep like a bank account where a week’s sleep deficit can simply be repaid all at once later. Sudden changes in sleep schedules can confuse the body’s internal clock and negatively affect sleep quality.

‎Researchers refer to this condition as social jet lag, which occurs when there is a significant difference between a person’s sleep and wake times on weekends and working days.

‎For example, if someone wakes up at 7 a.m. on weekdays but sleeps until 11 a.m. on Sunday, they may have difficulty falling asleep at their usual bedtime. As a result, despite sleeping longer, they may still feel tired on Monday morning.

‎According to experts, the effects of social jet lag include mental fog, reduced concentration, difficulty processing information, and decreased alertness.

‎Research studies have shown that maintaining a regular sleep schedule is just as important as getting adequate sleep. Inconsistent sleep and wake times can affect memory, attention, and overall cognitive performance.

‎Experts recommend sleeping no more than one additional hour beyond the usual schedule on weekends. If sleep has been lacking during the week, going to bed earlier rather than sleeping in late may be more beneficial.

‎Health experts also advise spending some time in natural sunlight during the morning, as it helps regulate the body’s internal clock and improve sleep patterns.

‎According to experts, people who maintain a consistent sleep schedule throughout the week tend to feel more refreshed, energetic, and mentally alert on Mondays.
