The Sindh government has announced a major expansion of its public transport system by introducing 50 double-decker buses and 500 electric (EV) buses as part of its efforts to provide modern, safe, and environmentally friendly transportation across the province.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, where officials reviewed ongoing transport projects, future infrastructure plans, and the availability of land for bus depots and parking facilities.
According to the provincial government, the addition of these new buses will significantly improve commuting facilities, reduce pressure on the existing public transport network, and encourage more people to use public transportation instead of private vehicles.
Officials have been directed to identify government land in different districts for the construction of new bus depots, ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of the expanded fleet. The government also plans to develop supporting infrastructure to accommodate the new buses.
As part of the project, 450 electric buses are expected to operate on 25 routes in Karachi, while 50 EV buses will serve five routes in Hyderabad. The government also plans to expand modern transport services to other cities, including Sukkur, in the coming phases.
The new electric buses are expected to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions while providing passengers with comfortable, air-conditioned, and affordable travel. Meanwhile, the double-decker buses will help carry more passengers during peak hours and ease congestion on busy routes.
The Sindh government says the initiative reflects its commitment to improving urban mobility and offering citizens a reliable and sustainable public transport system.
