Public parks across the North-East of England have secured the fewest Green Flag awards in the country this year, highlighting a widening gap in regional green space maintenance.

While parks in London and the North-West continue to dominate the national awards, the North-East’s tally remains noticeably low. The Green Flag scheme, which evaluates parks based on safety, cleanliness, and community involvement, has become a key barometer for local council performance. For residents in cities like Newcastle, Sunderland, and Middlesbrough, the lack of status isn’t just about the flags—it’s a signal of shrinking maintenance budgets.

Local authorities in the region have been forced to prioritize statutory services over park upkeep as central government funding continues to tighten. The result is visible: fewer flower beds, aging playground equipment, and reduced staffing for ground maintenance.

“The decline isn’t an accident,” says one local parks advocate. “It’s the direct result of a decade of austerity that has stripped local councils of their ability to manage these spaces to a professional standard.”

While the Green Flag is voluntary, it provides a benchmark for what a high-quality, accessible park should look like. Missing out on the accreditation often means missing out on potential grant funding and private investment that follows the prestige of the award.

The disparity raises questions about regional equity. As the government promises “levelling up” across the North, the state of public parks serves as a physical reminder of the distance left to cover. Without a change in funding models, the North-East’s green spaces are likely to remain in the shadow of their wealthier southern counterparts.

The awards serve as a tally of investment, and for the North-East, the scorecard is currently coming up short.
