Another patient has tested positive for the Congo virus in Pakistan. According to details, a 15-year-old patient at Nishtar Hospital in Multan has been diagnosed with the virus. The hospital administration stated that the affected patient hails from Mailsi, a tehsil of Vehari.
The patient, who was suffering from a high fever, was confirmed to be infected with the Congo virus after screening. He has been shifted to the isolation ward, and authorities are currently reviewing his travel history.
What is the Congo Virus?
The Congo virus is found in ticks that cling to the skin of livestock such as cows, bulls, goats, sheep, buffaloes, and camels. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected tick. The disease causes internal bleeding, which can lead to death.
Symptoms:
The virus causes a high fever, which significantly reduces the number of white blood cells in the body and affects blood clotting. As a result, the patient starts bleeding, and within a short period, the infection may spread to the lungs. The liver and kidneys may also stop functioning, leading to the patient’s death.
Precautionary Measures:
- Avoid physical contact with infected patients.
- Wear gloves while caring for an infected person.
- Wash hands thoroughly after visiting a patient.
- Wear long-sleeved clothing.
- Do not take children to livestock markets, even for recreational purposes.
