For the First Time in Sindh, Scanner Stick Developed for Visually Impaired Persons

For the first time in Sindh, a scanner stick has been developed for visually impaired persons. There are more than 6 million special children and other mentally challenged individuals in Sindh. Modern medical technology devices are also being developed to empower physically and mentally disabled persons, including children with autism.

‎For the first time in Sindh, a sensor-equipped scanner stick has been designed to assist visually impaired individuals, while various other devices are being created through modern technology to make the lives of physically disabled and autistic children more functional. These scanner sticks and devices are being developed by the Department of Biomedical Technology at NED University.

‎In this regard, an agreement has been signed between the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of Sindh, and NED University, under which this project will be introduced this month as a pilot project for the first time in Sindh. In the first phase, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of Sindh, will provide the scanner stick free of cost to visually impaired persons.

‎Secretary of Empowerment, Taha Ahmed Farooqui, told that for the first time in Sindh, scanner sticks have been developed for visually impaired individuals, while other devices are also being prepared through modern medical technology to empower physically and mentally challenged individuals, including children with autism.

‎He further said that the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of Sindh, will also provide these modern medical devices free of cost to other disabled individuals.

‎He stated that there are over 6 million special children and other mentally and physically challenged individuals in Sindh. The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of Sindh, in collaboration with NED University’s Biomedical Engineering Department, has developed various devices, including MindFoster to improve mental health and sleep, Binaural Beats to enhance focus, Neurofeedback for cognitive skills, Digital Cognitive Assessment for patient profiling and monitoring, Trunk Orthosis for disabled persons, Floor to Chair Patient Lifter for spinal cord patients, WalkAid for blind persons’ mobility, HerCrampsEase medicated pads for girls during menstrual cycles, and EasyMobility devices to assist disabled persons in moving around easily.

‎Taha Farooqui added that this month, the scanner sticks will be distributed free of cost to visually impaired individuals, while other devices for mentally and physically challenged persons will also be provided free of charge.
