Gilgit Baltistan bans Commercial Activities in Deosai Park

GILGIT: The Gilgit Baltistan government has banned all seasonal hotels and commercial activities inside Deosai National Park in a move aimed at protecting its delicate environment and natural beauty.

According to a notification issued by the Forest, Parks and Wildlife Department, the ban will apply during the upcoming tourist season. Authorities said the decision was taken to prevent environmental damage caused by unregulated tourism and commercial expansion in the high-altitude park.

The notification explained that hotels, temporary accommodations, and other business activities pose a serious threat to Deosai’s fragile ecosystem. Officials have directed hotel owners and managements to strictly follow the new rules and refrain from setting up any tourist facilities within the park boundaries.

The government also warned that legal action will be taken against anyone found violating the ban, signaling a stricter approach to conservation.

Deosai National Park, located between Skardu and Astore districts, sits at an average elevation of 4,114 meters above sea level. Often called the “Land of Giants,” it is one of Pakistan’s most iconic summer destinations, known for its vast alpine plains, colorful wildflowers, rare Himalayan brown bears, and stunning landscapes.

The park has recently drawn attention due to safety and environmental concerns. In September this year, singer Quratulain Balouch was injured during a rare Himalayan brown bear attack while camping in the area. Following the incident, authorities had already imposed a ban on camping inside the park.

Deosai National Park remains open to visitors from June to November each year, but officials stress that tourism must now align with conservation efforts to ensure the protection of this unique natural treasure for future generations.
