Contact lenses can make everyday life more convenient, but for some people, wearing them can also lead to dryness, irritation, burning and blurry vision. Contact lens-related dry eye occurs partly because the lens separates the eye’s natural tear film into two layers, which can reduce moisture on the surface and increase friction between the lens and the eye.

Why Do Contact Lenses Cause Dry Eyes?

The tear film normally keeps the surface of the eye lubricated and protected. When a contact lens sits on the eye, it can interfere with this moisture layer. Some lenses, particularly those with high water content, may also draw moisture from the tear film. Wearing lenses for long periods or using lenses that do not fit properly can make symptoms worse.

Common symptoms include:

  • Burning or stinging
  • Redness
  • Blurred vision
  • A gritty or sandy feeling
  • Eye discomfort
  • Excessive watering

1. Give Your Eyes Regular Breaks

Long periods of contact lens use can increase dryness. Giving your eyes breaks, particularly during extended screen use, may help reduce discomfort. Following the 20-20-20 rule—looking about 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes—can also help reduce digital eye strain and dryness.

2. Avoid Dry and Irritating Environments

Wind, cigarette smoke and air conditioning can make dry-eye symptoms worse. Wearing glasses or wraparound sunglasses outdoors can help protect the eyes from wind and other environmental triggers.

Using a humidifier can also add moisture to dry indoor air and may make symptoms more manageable.

3. Try Warm Compresses

A warm compress applied for around 10 minutes may help relax the eyes and support the function of the glands along the eyelids that contribute oil to the tear film.

4. Use Lubricating Eye Drops When Recommended

An eye doctor may recommend artificial tears to lubricate the eyes and relieve dryness. In more severe cases, prescription treatments may be considered to improve tear production or prevent tears from draining too quickly.

It is best to ask an eye-care professional which drops are appropriate when wearing contact lenses.

5. Follow Proper Contact Lens Hygiene

Poor lens hygiene can cause irritation and increase the risk of eye infections. Always wash and dry your hands before handling lenses. Clean and disinfect reusable lenses according to the recommended instructions and store them in fresh contact-lens solution.

Never use tap water to clean or store contact lenses.

6. Do Not Sleep or Swim With Your Lenses

Removing contact lenses before sleeping is an important part of proper lens care. You should also remove them before swimming, showering or participating in activities where water can enter your eyes.

Water can expose contact lenses to microorganisms that may cause serious eye infections.

7. Replace Your Lenses and Case on Schedule

Contact lenses should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Reusable lens cases should also be replaced regularly; Health recommends replacing the case every three months.

8. Choose the Right Type of Contact Lens

Not all contact lenses affect dry eyes in the same way. An ophthalmologist can recommend a lens based on your eye health, comfort and lifestyle. Options include soft lenses, silicone hydrogel lenses, hard lenses and daily disposable lenses.

Daily disposable lenses may be less likely to cause dryness for some people because they are replaced each day, reducing the buildup of debris.

When Should You See an Eye Doctor?

If you experience persistent pain, discomfort, redness, watery eyes or vision changes while wearing contact lenses, consult an ophthalmologist. You may need a different lens type, a change in lens fit or a temporary break from contact lenses.

The Bottom Line

Dry eyes do not necessarily mean you have to stop wearing contact lenses permanently. Taking regular breaks, avoiding dry environments, maintaining proper lens hygiene and choosing the right type of lens can help reduce symptoms. If dryness continues or is accompanied by pain or vision changes, professional eye care is important.
