Kuwait’s Ministry of Social Affairs has issued a final warning to all cooperative societies: meet national food safety standards or face immediate administrative action. The directive follows a string of surprise inspections that uncovered expired goods, improper storage, and failing hygiene protocols at various retail outlets across the country.

The Ministry isn’t mincing words. Officials confirmed today that inspectors found “systemic negligence” in several locations, ranging from temperature-controlled warehouses to the refrigerated display units where residents buy daily staples.

Why does this matter? Cooperatives serve as the primary source of groceries for the vast majority of Kuwaiti households. When these outlets cut corners, the health risk isn’t limited to a single neighborhood—it impacts the entire supply chain.

“We are done with soft warnings,” a ministry source told reporters this morning, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the ongoing crackdown. “If the shelves aren’t safe, the store doesn’t open. It’s that simple.”

The ministry has mandated that every cooperative appoint a dedicated quality control officer by the end of the month. These officers will be personally liable for the state of the inventory. Furthermore, the government has launched a digital portal where citizens can upload photos of expired or improperly stored goods directly to the inspection department.

For years, these cooperatives operated with a degree of autonomy that critics say led to lax oversight. That era is ending. The new enforcement push aligns with broader government efforts to centralize food security standards as the country navigates volatile regional supply chains.

Managers at three major cooperatives in Hawalli and Farwaniya have already been summoned for questioning after inspectors flagged “critical violations” regarding the storage of frozen poultry.

The Ministry’s message to boards of directors is clear: fix the internal audit process now, or prepare to explain the failures in court. The next round of inspections begins Sunday, and this time, the ministry says it won’t be handing out any more grace periods.
