Senior PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb has launched a sharp defense of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, dismissing mounting criticism over the Chief Minister’s recent use of a private jet and her provocative comments regarding political opponents.

The controversy ignited earlier this week when images surfaced showing the Chief Minister traveling on a chartered aircraft for official engagements. Opposition leaders, primarily from the PTI, seized on the optics, labeling the travel as an “extravagant display of privilege” at a time when the province faces a severe fiscal crunch.

Aurangzeb, acting as the administration’s primary spokesperson, brushed off the backlash. She characterized the criticism as a “manufactured outrage” designed to distract from the government’s ongoing development initiatives in Punjab.

“The Chief Minister’s travel is strictly in line with official requirements,” Aurangzeb said during a briefing in Lahore. She argued that the time saved by air travel allows the CM to oversee multiple administrative projects across the province in a single day, an efficiency she claims the opposition is intentionally ignoring.

The defense extended to the Chief Minister’s recent rhetoric. During a public address, Maryam Nawaz drew sharp ire for equating political dissent with “terrorism” and “anti-state activities,” a framing that rights groups and opposition members have condemned as an attempt to stifle democratic space.

Aurangzeb maintained that the Chief Minister’s remarks were aimed at those who “incite chaos” rather than legitimate political rivals. “There is a clear difference between exercising one’s right to protest and actively working to destabilize the state,” she told reporters.

However, political analysts suggest the administration is struggling to control the narrative. The optics of high-cost travel, combined with aggressive language toward critics, have provided the opposition with significant ammunition as they look to capitalize on the public’s frustration with rising utility costs and inflation.

For now, the PML-N remains on the offensive. By framing the criticism as a coordinated smear campaign, Aurangzeb is signaling that the provincial government has no intention of scaling back the Chief Minister’s public-facing style or her blunt approach to political sparring.

Whether this strategy will quiet the critics or further alienate a public already wary of government spending remains the central question for the current administration.
