A haunting, high-contrast image of the Running Man Nebula has claimed the top prize at the Royal Observatory Greenwich’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. The shot, captured by amateur astronomer Ryan Imperio, beat out thousands of entries from across the globe to secure the £10,000 top award.

Imperio’s winning entry, titled *Distorted Shadows*, documents the nebula’s structure over a series of nights. What sets this image apart isn’t just the clarity of the gas clouds—it’s the way Imperio captured the subtle, shifting light of the Sh2-279 nebula, located roughly 1,500 light-years away in the constellation Orion.

“This is a masterclass in patience,” said judge and photographer Steve Marsh. “The technical precision required to track these movements and present them with such clarity is rare.”

The competition, now in its 16th year, received over 3,500 entries from 58 countries. While the category winners range from lunar landscapes to deep-space galactic spirals, Imperio’s work stood out for its unique focus on the “running man” shape, formed by the complex interplay of dark dust and glowing hydrogen.

For Imperio, the win is a validation of the grueling hours spent in his backyard observatory. He spent the better part of a year refining the data, battling light pollution and atmospheric interference to pull the faint details of the nebula out of the darkness.

“I wanted to show that you don’t need a professional space agency budget to capture the scale of the universe,” Imperio said after the ceremony. “You just need a clear night and a lot of persistence.”

The winning images will be on display at the National Maritime Museum in London starting this week. The exhibition offers a rare look at the intersection of rigorous scientific data and artistic composition, proving that the most compelling views of the cosmos often come from those looking up from their own backyards.
