Pakistan is paying tribute to Agha Hasan Abedi, one of the country’s most influential bankers and philanthropists, whose contributions continue to leave a lasting impact on Pakistan’s financial, educational, and social sectors. Widely recognized as the founder of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), Abedi revolutionized international banking by expanding financial services across dozens of countries.
Beyond banking, Abedi strongly believed in investing in education, science, and social welfare. His vision led to the establishment of institutions such as the Foundation for Advancement of Science and Technology (FAST), which later became the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (FAST-NUCES), and he also played a significant role in supporting the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI). These institutions continue to produce skilled graduates in engineering, technology, and business.
Although BCCI eventually collapsed amid financial controversies in the early 1990s, historians and economists acknowledge that Abedi’s contributions to education, innovation, and philanthropy remain significant. His vision for empowering developing nations through education and financial inclusion continues to inspire many in Pakistan.
