Storm Threat Looms Over U.S. Open Golf Championship After Scorching Start at Oakmont

Oakmont, Pennsylvania – The 125th edition of the prestigious U.S. Open golf tournament has teed off at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh, marking a record tenth time the historic course is hosting the event. While Thursday’s play began under dry and unusually warm conditions, weather forecasts suggest that thunderstorms could disrupt the weekend rounds.

A Hot Opening Day

Thursday saw temperatures climb into the mid-80s Fahrenheit—well above the June average for the region. The day remained rain-free, giving players and spectators a clear start.

Friday: Cooling Slightly, With Uncertainty

Weather experts predict a slight dip in temperature by Friday, with highs hovering around the regional norm of 79°F. A weak cold front moving into Pennsylvania brings a slim chance of an isolated afternoon shower or thunderstorm. However, meteorological models disagree on the extent of moisture expected.

Weekend Weather: Storms on the Horizon

Conditions are likely to change significantly by Saturday and Sunday. Moist air advancing from the west-southwest, in combination with a stationary front, could lead to storm activity each afternoon. The likelihood of rainfall stands above 50% on both days, with potential for heavy downpours and lightning. This could result in weather delays and safety interruptions during the rounds.

Tournament Snapshot

Venue: Oakmont Country Club, near Pittsburgh

Duration: Thursday to Sunday

Participants: 156 players, with a cut after Friday

Feature Highlight: Oakmont’s iconic “Church Pew” bunker between holes 3 and 4 remains a major challenge.

Expert Insight

Senior meteorologist Chris Dolce, a veteran at weather.com, advised, “Thunderstorm chances are quite significant over the weekend. Afternoon delays can’t be ruled out.”

Spectator Advisory

Those planning to attend should come prepared with rain gear and monitor updates from tournament officials. With high-level golf and unpredictable weather both on the cards, fans can expect an eventful weekend
