Cases of an unusual skin disease are being reported among squirrels in various suburban areas of the United States, causing growths to develop on their bodies. Wildlife experts have informally dubbed the affected animals “zombie squirrels.”
According to experts, the condition is caused by a viral disease known as squirrel fibromatosis, which is linked to the Leporipoxvirus.
The virus can spread from an infected squirrel to other squirrels through direct contact with wounds or saliva. The disease results in wart like growths on the body, which can sometimes discharge fluid.
Experts say that many affected squirrels recover without treatment. However, in severe cases, the growths can spread to internal organs and may become life threatening.
Experts have also clarified that this disease should not be confused with squirrelpox, which is common in the United Kingdom and is considered particularly dangerous for red squirrels.
The disease remains a concern for organizations monitoring wildlife health, while members of the public have been advised to avoid touching or feeding squirrels showing such symptoms.
