Dermatology experts have raised serious concerns over the growing trend of unsafe and unregulated skin treatments in the city, warning that such procedures can cause severe infections, burns, and permanent scars.
Speaking at a seminar titled “Medical Aesthetic Awareness and Daily Care for a Healthy Pakistan” held at the National Science Information Center, experts highlighted the dangers of substandard practices in the beauty industry. The event was organized by Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD), University of Karachi, in collaboration with Sindh Innovation Research and Education Network (SIREN) and the Government of Sindh.
Consultant gynecologist and aesthetic physician Dr. Tasneem Kausar stressed that many people fall into the trap of cheap salons, unverified products, and untrained practitioners, resulting in long-term skin damage. She pointed out that unsafe treatments often involve poor quality products, unregulated energy-based devices, lack of hygiene, and misleading whitening creams or injections.
Dermatologist Dr. Sana Adeel emphasized that common skin issues such as acne, if mishandled, can escalate into long-term conditions like sun damage. She urged people to consult certified dermatologists, choose credible beauty clinics, ask questions about products, and strictly follow after-care guidelines. She also highlighted fungal skin infections as highly contagious and stressed that all medical and cosmetic procedures must only be performed by trained professionals.
Experts concluded that mandatory registration of beauty clinics and strict regulation of cosmetic treatments are vital to ensure safe healthcare practices in Pakistan.
