Yawning is something everyone does, yet scientists are still discovering why it happens. While many people think yawning simply means you’re tired, the truth is more interesting.
One leading theory suggests that yawning helps cool the brain. When you yawn, you take a deep breath and stretch your jaw muscles, which may improve blood flow and help regulate brain temperature.
Yawning is also linked to changes in alertness. It often occurs when you’re sleepy, bored, or transitioning between being awake and asleep. Interestingly, yawning is contagious. Seeing someone else yawn—or even reading about yawning—can trigger the same response, likely because of the brain’s social and empathetic connections.
Although yawning is usually normal, excessive yawning that happens frequently without an obvious reason may be worth discussing with a doctor.
