Getting enough sleep is often treated as a luxury when work, studies and daily responsibilities become demanding. However, regularly cutting back on sleep may affect much more than energy levels. Research has linked insufficient sleep with changes in appetite, metabolism and eating behaviour that may contribute to weight gain.

When people consistently sleep less than they need, their bodies may respond in ways that make healthy weight management more difficult.

Sleep can influence appetite

Sleep and appetite are closely connected. Lack of sleep may affect hormones and brain signals involved in hunger and fullness.

A tired person may feel hungrier during the day and may be more likely to choose calorie-dense foods. Cravings for sweet or highly processed foods can also become harder to resist when someone is exhausted.

Tiredness can reduce physical activity

Sleep deprivation can also make exercise feel more difficult. Someone who has slept poorly may have less motivation and energy to walk, exercise or remain physically active.

Over time, lower activity combined with increased food intake can contribute to weight gain.

Poor sleep may affect metabolism

Sleep plays an important role in the body’s regulation of glucose and energy metabolism. Chronic sleep restriction has been associated with changes in insulin sensitivity and other metabolic processes.

These changes do not mean that one bad night’s sleep will cause weight gain. The greater concern is a repeated pattern of insufficient sleep.

Late nights may change eating habits

People who stay awake late have more opportunities to eat. Evening snacking, takeaway meals and sugary drinks can add substantial calories to the daily diet.

Eating late at night is not automatically responsible for weight gain, but late-night habits can become problematic when they involve frequent high-calorie foods and drinks.

How can you improve your sleep?

Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule can help. Try going to bed and waking up at roughly the same times each day.

Reducing bright screens before bedtime, keeping the bedroom comfortable and avoiding excessive caffeine late in the day may also support better sleep.

The bottom line

Sleep is an important part of healthy weight management. Regularly sacrificing sleep may affect appetite, food choices, physical activity and metabolic health.

Instead of focusing only on diet and exercise, make adequate sleep part of your overall strategy for maintaining a healthy weight.
