PESHAWAR (April 20, 2026): In a historic move, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly has decided to hold its session for the first time outside its traditional assembly building, choosing the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium as the venue.
KP Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati announced that the session will take place on April 22 at 3:00 PM, marking an unprecedented step in the province’s parliamentary history.
According to officials, the decision aims to promote transparency and allow the general public to directly observe legislative proceedings. The speaker stated that holding the session in an open venue would strengthen democratic accountability and enhance public engagement with elected representatives.
Both Treasury and opposition members have agreed to the arrangement. The opposition has welcomed the initiative, saying it will provide an opportunity to raise questions about government performance in front of the public.
Authorities, including the police and district administration, have been directed to finalise security and logistical arrangements for the event. Senior officials have already visited the stadium to review preparations.
The stadium itself, recently renamed after former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has been a significant political and cultural landmark in Peshawar.
This open-session initiative may set a precedent, as officials indicated that similar public sessions could be held in other districts in the future to further strengthen public participation in governance.
