Karachi — Sindh Minister for Local Government and Chairman of the Greater Karachi Regional Plan 2047 Steering Committee, Saeed Ghani, has said that Karachi currently lacks an approved master plan, which is resulting in serious mismanagement and disorder in the city.
He made these remarks while presiding over the first meeting of the steering committee for the Greater Karachi Regional Plan 2047. The meeting was attended by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Additional Chief Secretary Local Government Waseem Shamshad, Senior Member Board of Revenue Baqaullah Unar, Secretary P&D Sajjad Abbasi, Project Director Muhammad Arshad Khan, DGs of SBCA, KDA, MDA, LDA, and representatives of consultancy firms involved in the project.
The project director briefed the committee about the progress made so far, while the CEOs of the consulting companies presented a detailed overview of Phase One of the plan.
Saeed Ghani stated that the absence of a current approved master plan is the core reason behind Karachi’s disorganized urban condition. He added that the Greater Karachi Regional Plan 2047 is being prepared under the supervision of the local government and will serve as a roadmap for the city’s development until the year 2047.
He emphasized that this plan will involve all stakeholders, municipal bodies, and civil society, and aims to solve issues related to illegal construction, water supply, sewage, health, education, transport, infrastructure, and trade.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab stated that the previous master plan ended in 2017, and since then, the city has been functioning without a strategic development framework, leading to chaos in various sectors.
He expressed hope that the completion of this plan will bring a much-needed structure to Karachi’s development and improve the quality of life for its residents. He also reiterated the Sindh government’s commitment to ensuring inclusive participation in the planning process for sustainable growth.
